Topic 8: some people think science contributes more to the society; others believe subjects such as language or business make a bigger contribution. What’s your opinion?
The overall advancement of a society can be attributed to many fundamental boosters. Some people assert that science has played a pivotal role in promoting social progress, whereas others attribute the reason to other subjects like language or business. I think both science and other subjects are indispensable in the development of mankind, and the subjects are actually interacting and interdependent.

To begin with, characterized by great trend of globalization, 21st century has witnessed more frequent communication between nations in every arena, such as international trade and academic research. And no subject can make remarkable contribution without the linkage with other subjects. For example, nowadays, most of the major scientific journals are published in English, and thus, if a Chinese scientist wants to get acquainted with the latest information in his field, the ability of reading English is a prerequisite. And what’s more, if he attains some groundbreaking breakthrough, the only way to inform the scientific community is to crystallize his findings in English essay and publish in prevailing international scientific journals. Besides, no matter how advanced the science or technology is, they will eventually be used in commercialized ways, and thus science need mature business operation to gain profit to sustain its further development. Therefore, in such an epoch when the earth is a small village where information is exchanged at a staggering speed, all the subjects are actually functioning interdependently.

Besides, each subject has their unique scope of research that cannot be replaced by other subjects. Take psychology for example. No matter how many intractable problems can be solved by latest science, or how cutting-edge products technology has brought about, they cannot solve many serious mental problems plaguing people nowadays, such as depression, low self-esteem etc. And other serious problems hindering people from harmonious lives such as juvenile delinquency and traffic congestion etc require more effort made into subjects into sociology and architecture.

To conclude, being one of the major contributors of social development, science needs to go hand-in-hand with other subjects to achieve greater influences. Moreover, each subject is irreplaceable and plays unique role in modern society.
