HI, how are you?

The transition between your ideas is very smooth that there is ease in reading your essay. Good job! Very few could achieve such fluidity in transition. Meanwhile, you tend to use some phrases that are very common or are overused in language tests. Stay away from them because they won’t help your lexical resource rating. Finally, be careful with the use of relative phrases (which). Always remember that ‘which’ is a pronoun and its pronoun is always the noun before it. In such a case, there is often a risk in using it because some tend to set its antecedent as a farther noun or as a phrase. In such a case, the sentence loses sense and the use of ‘which’ will have been wrong. Just be cautious.

Difference between conjunctions, relative pronouns and relative adverbs
SEPTEMBER 10, 2013

Conjunctions, relative pronouns and relative adverbs can be used to connect two clauses. The grammar is different. Prepositions do not connect two clauses. They merely show the relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word in the sentence.

Relative pronouns

Relative pronouns are different from conjunctions. Relative pronouns are important connecting devices. They not only connect two clauses but also act as the subject or object of the verb in the relative clause. This is the main difference between conjunctions and relative pronouns. Conjunctions merely connect two clauses. They do not serve any other purpose.

Study the sentences given below.

This is the letter. My mother sent me this letter.

We can connect these two clauses.

This is the letter that my mother sent me.

Here the relative pronoun that replaces the phrase this letter and acts as the object of the verb sent. It is easy to decide whether a relative pronoun is the subject or the object. When it is the object it will be immediately followed by another noun which acts as the subject. In this case, the relative pronoun ‘that’ is followed by the noun ‘my mother’ which acts as the subject.

Another example is given below.

This is the boy. He won the first prize.

This is the boy who won the first prize.

Here the relative pronoun who replaces the pronoun he. It acts as the subject of the relative clause.

Relative adverb

The relative adverb not only modifies a verb, but also joins the two clauses in a sentence. Note that a relative adverb does not act as the subject or object in the relative clause. It merely replaces an adverb.

This is the house. John lives here.

This is the house where John lives.

Here the relative adverb where replaces the place adverb here.

Another example is given below.

I first met Susie on that day. I will never forget that day.

I will never forget the day when I first met Susie.

Conjunctions and relative pronouns
Posted by Manjusha. Filed in English Grammar

ESL students often have problems in using English conjunctions correctly.

One conjunction for two clauses
One conjunction is enough to join two clauses - we do not normally use two.
• Though he is poor, he is happy. OR He is poor but he is happy. (NOT Though he is poor, but he is happy.)
• Because I liked him, I helped him. OR I liked him so I helped him. (NOT Because I liked him so I helped him.)

Notes
The conjunctions soand yet are sometimes used with and.
• I didn't post that letter, and so she never heard about my illness.

Relative pronouns
Relative pronouns (e.g. what, which and that) are like conjunctions in some ways: they join clauses like conjunctions do.
• There's the girl who won the prize.
Here the relative pronoun who joins the clauses 'There is the girl' and 'She won the prize'.

A relative pronoun acts as the subject or object of the verb that comes after it. Therefore we do not need another subject or object. In the sentence given above the relative pronoun who is the subject of the verb won.
• I have got a friend who works in a call center. (NOT I have got a friend who he works in a call center.)
• The man that she married was a journalist. (NOT The man that she married him was a journalist.)

That, when and where
The relative pronoun that is often used instead of which, who and whom.
• The man whom / that she married is a friend of mine.
That cannot be used instead of when or where.
• The shop where I work is very small. (NOT The shop that I work is very small.)
But that...in can mean the same as where.
• The shop that I work in is very small.
